What I’ve Been Listening to:

Gotye- ‘Somebody I Use To Know’(Geffen) : Taking musical and visual cues from Sting and Peter Gabriel, Gotye released a great song that is very vocally driven and soft. The song also has a great music video that you should check out.

Jonathan Wilson- ‘Gentle Spirit’(Bella Union): This song is the title track from Wilson’s 2011 album. The song is a beautifully composed track that sounds like a mix of Elliot Smith, CSNY, and John Lennon’s solo work. Check out the live version of this song below.

Coheed & Cambria- ‘April Come She Will’(Columbia): This is a great cover of the Simon & Garfunkel tune. Coheed’s lead singer Claudio Sanchez has a great vocal performance on this track. Hopefully we will hear a new Coheed record soon.

What I’ve Been Listening to This Week

Mastodon ‘The Hunter’ (Reprise): One of my favorite releases of 2011 was Mastodon’s ‘The Hunter’. This album seemed as though it was a melting pot of Mastodon’s previous styles fused with  more rock n’ roll sensibilities. The album is very  diversified and minimalist at points. Some of the best songs on the album are ‘Black Tounge’, Curl of The Burl’, ‘Creature Lives’, and ‘The Hunter’.

Bon Iver ‘Bon Iver’ (Jagjaguwar) : After a performance on SNL last weekend my music’s best kept secret came out. I like many others got Bon Iver’s album in 2o11 and fell in love with it. If you don’t know this brainchild of Justin Vernon you soon will.

Van Halen ‘A Different Kind Of Truth’ (Interscope): Full Review Here

In Flames ‘Sounds of a Playground Fading’ (Roadrunner):  Swedish band, In Flames show why they are the kings of melodic metal with their latest album, ‘Sounds of a Playground Fading’ . As One of my favorite bands I was very surprised to hear this record, which is nothing like anything In Flames has done in the past. With a focus on song structure, this album really drives one to think conceptually. Not only does it make you conceptually think about the lyrics and the songs, but the composition and orchestration of each track. These factors make it a true masterpiece.
