What happens when you put Black Sabbath, Kiss, and Pink Floyd into a blender? The simple answer is Atlanta’s MonstrO a four piece Metal band that borders on straight up Rock n’ Roll. The band was formed in 2009 by bass player Kyle Sanders, drummer Bevan Davies, guitarist Juan Montoya, and guitarist/vocalist Carlos Suarez. Two years after their formation they brought us their selftitled debut album MonstrO a collection of ten great tracks that bring one back to various points in the musical timeline, but MonstrO is definitely not a nostalgia act.
Their songs have a definite familiar vibe like the track “Concertina” that sounds as if U2, Rush, and Led Zeppelin got in a room and jammed out a song. Then you get into the tracks like “Fantasma” which could have easily gone on the first Soundgarden record mixed with The Melvins. Then you get tracks like “Anchors Up!” which is a beautiful straight up rock tune. Then you have the more sludgey numbers like “Stallone”, “Solar”, or “Apollo”. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have the beautiful ambient tracks like “Elizabeth” and “April”.
When you’re looking for a diverse album in the rock/metal genre MonstrO have that cornered. Be sure to check out their eponymous debut album, and make sure to watch for more material in the future.
